My argument is that he realized he didn't want the job after he was shot at twice, and that that is why he started tanking his campaign.
The giveaway is when he didn't do any campaigning around Labor Day. He just doesn't care anymore.
He's an asshole, and he's going out in flames.
Interesting take, however, I don't think so.
1) He's been getting away with almost anything he's done and said, in particular, for years,
2) He can't pardon himself if he's not POTUS again.

Tons of people are betting on him, but he doesn't want the job anymore. Being shot at scared him. That was too real for him.
Not sure if we'll ever find out, but I can live with that if there us a #BlueWave.
